HUMANE SOCIETY FOR SHELTER PETS
The Humane Society for Shelter Pets exists because there is no national pet shelter umbrella group. There is, however, a lot of confusion about national and local animal charities. For example, both People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) spend very little of their resources supporting local pet shelters.

Local shelters, and the 8 million dogs and cats that enter them every year, need an advocate to help donations reach their target. In these difficult economic times, pet shelters are feeling the shortfall in charitable giving. Many shelters already operate on tight budgets to provide needed hands-on care and don’t have the time or money to spread a “give local” message. So we’ve established a national advocate to do just that.

HSUS: Token Help for Pet Shelters?                                    (Feb 16 2012)

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is not affiliated with local humane societies, but it raises money like it is one by showing misleading ads full of dogs and cats. In reality, a minor fraction of HSUS’s efforts involve pets, and HSUS only gives 1 percent of the money is raises to hands-on pet shelters.
HSUS retorts that it provides services to shelters besides grant money. Sure—at a cost. But what does HSUS do for free?
We have noticed that HSUS is involved with the Shelter Pet Project, a series of PSAs encouraging adopting from shelters—a good thing. The project is a collaborative effort between HSUS, the Ad Council, Maddie’s Fund, and a firm called Draftfcb.

HUMANE ALLIANCE SPAY/NEUTER CLINIC
The primary goal of Humane Alliance is to provide a non-lethal solution to companion animal over-population. Humane Alliance Spay/Neuter Clinic began as a small clinic in Asheville, North Carolina in 1994. Today, we help control the animal population by providing high-volume, high-quality, low-cost spay/neuter procedures for the entire Western North Carolina region. We’re also the home of the National Spay/Neuter Response Team (NSNRT).

ASILOMAR ACCORDS
In August of 2004, a group of animal welfare industry leaders from across the nation convened at Asilomar in Pacific Grove, California, for the purpose of building bridges across varying philosophies, developing relationships and creating goals focused on significantly reducing the euthanasia of healthy and treatable companion animals in the United States.

MADDIE’S FUND
About Us
The Maddie's Fund® mission is to revolutionize the status and well-being of companion animals.
Maddie's Fund, the Pet Rescue Foundation, is a family foundation established in 1999 to help fund the creation of a no-kill nation. Since its inception, Maddie's Fund has awarded animal welfare organizations and universities $96.2 million to save dog and cat lives.

RESOURCE LIBRARY
We've commissioned hundreds of articles by experts in animal welfare, veterinary medicine, organizational development, law, marketing, media relations and other disciplines, all in an effort to bring new perspectives to animal welfare issues and generate additional support for the no-kill nation goal.
The library articles are organized in five reading rooms:
http://www.maddiesfund.org/About_Us.html

http://www.600milliondogs.org/
The name of the organization comes from the estimated 600 million stray dogs who exist around the world on any given day, giving birth to between one and three billion puppies each year—many, many of which are tortured or inhumanely killed, and live in horrible conditions. The solution Alex envisions is relatively straightforward, if daunting—to develop oral sterilization pills which will chemically spay or neuter stray dogs (much safer, less traumatic to the animal, less costly, and logistically simpler than surgical spay and neuter procedures), and distribute these sterilization pills globally, focusing initially on the countries with the greatest need (need being defined as the most barbaric treatment of strays). Once the dog sterilization program is underway, the plan is to immediately implement a parallel program for an equally vexing problem-- feral cats.

WHO ARE WE

DogsInDanger.com is an award winning web site owned and operated by The Buddy Fund Inc. and was founded by two dog lovers, Alex Aliksanyan & Brenda Bush, both directors of The Buddy Fund. The website was launched in October 2007 with the goal of:
Getting as many of these dogs adopted into loving homes as possible, before their time runs out; and

Raising awareness of the number of dogs being killed in shelters.
The co-founders dedicated their respective skills, The Buddy Fund provided the funding, and the shelters listed the dogs.

The founders have many more ideas to implement, all aimed at eradicating the needless killing of those we call our best friends.

Poetry – I Am Going To Rescue This One
Savana Frame February 20, 2012

There was no time left, I had been sentenced to die.
I would go all alone, for me, no one would cry.
Then, like an angel, sent from above,
You pulled me out, of the hole they had dug.
You had come at the last minute, and said, “Who is going to die?”
They told you, “Four dogs, are on the list tonight.”
You stopped at each kennel, and I saw you kiss their nose.
And when you finally stopped at me, I prayed you wouldn’t go.
You looked at me with sad eyes, I knew your choice was hard.
It was like a game of black jack, and I wondered which dog held the cards.
I didn’t figure you would pick me, as you started to turn away.
“I am going to rescue this one,” is what I heard you say.
I looked up at you, and you were pointing your finger right at me.
I couldn’t believe it, finally I would be free.
I will never forget that day, and how you saved my life.
I know the choice isn’t easy, deciding who will live or die.

The Author

I am an artist and freelance writer. In addition to Up On The Woof, I am the author of Born Without a Tail, the true-life chronicle of two animal rescuers living with an ever-changing house full of pets. My partner and I have been involved in companion animal rescue since 1986, sometimes sheltering as many as sixteen animals at a time in our home. Currently, we share our lives with five misfit dogs who are the subject of my coming book, Circling the...

Spanish Street Dogs; the other Waifs and Strays.

Spanish Street Dogs; the other Waifs and Strays is about the many and varied dogs that we find around our village. Many are abandonados, some are just plain lost, all are real characters, mostly streetwise but occasionally foolhardy.
These are some of the stories...

Waifs and Strays...Sobering Thought...
13 October 2011

Needs no translation...
Just a shame that Spanish vets are so reluctant to spay before a first season.
UK and USA vets all advocate spaying of non-breeding bitches at six months.
So puppies and kittens born from a street dog or cat that survive the first six months and then remain on the streets are free to breed as nature intended and believe me, they can and do... the mating urge is just too strong to ignore. So despite the best efforts of all the rescue organisations this is a problem that isn't going to go away.

What is needed is a nationwide capture, spay, hold and release programme,

MAV'S FRIENDS

Mission

Mav’s Friends was set up with the goal of helping animals in need. At this point, Mav’s Friends has two primary causes: 1) to rescue and treat animals who have been abused and are in need of critical care, and 2) to provide funding to smaller rescue groups who have acute financial needs.

Over the past few years, we have been fortunate to meet a variety of amazing people and rescue groups that do incredible things for animals, and this is our effort to help advance the animal rescue effort in our own small way.

This effort is in its earliest stages and we are unsure of how it will evolve but if we are able to help even a few people and their pets, it will have been worth the effort. Please visit us again down the road and see how we are progressing.

Painful talk with friend who keeps dog chained outside
Another dog (not Fido) who spends his life on a chain, howled when
I stopped petting him and left
A golden retriever spends his life chained up—winter, summer, spring, and fall—in the parking lot of one of the island of Kefalonia’s biggest rental car companies, operated by the niece of one of my dearest friends.

Around one o’clock in the afternoon today I stopped by to see if the niece—we’ll call her “Maria”—was there so as to give her some grapefruit from our trees. Seeing the dog chained outside, I thought Maria must be in the office working. Maybe she had left the dog out there temporarily to catch some of the week’s rare sunshine.

But she wasn’t there, and neither was anyone else.

The dog—we’ll call him "Fido"—danced happily and showered me with grateful affection. When I left, he howled.
Two hours later, the dog was still there  (more)

NATHAN WINOGRAD: very informative blog
We have the power to build a new consensus, which rejects killing as a method for achieving results. And we can look forward to a time when the wholesale slaughter of animals in shelters is viewed as a cruel aberration of the past. We have a choice. We can fully, completely, and without reservation embrace No Kill as our future. Or we can continue to legitimize the two-pronged strategy of failure: adopt a few and kill the rest. It is a choice which history has thrown upon us. We are the generation that questioned the killing. We are the generation that has discovered how to stop it. Will we be the generation that does?

NO KILL COMMUNITIES: tracking open-admission, no-kill shelters

This blog tracks open-admission no-kill shelters. “Open-admission” (also known as “open-intake”) shelters are obligated to take in strays (either serving as animal control themselves or accepting strays from animal control) and animals surrendered by people who live in the area served by the shelter — in other words, these shelters cannot pick and choose what animals they take in or how many animals they take in. “No-kill” shelters are ones that maintain a 90% or better live release rate. That is, 90% or more of the animals that come into the shelter leave it alive, whether they go to an adoptive home, a rescue, or are returned to their owners. More and more shelters are managing to be both open-admission and no-kill, which is a revolution in animal sheltering.

KANSAS CITY DOG BLOG
January 21, 2012 Keeping animals out of shelters, and increasing Return To Owners
Eliminating unnecessary shelter killing is pretty easy math: lower the number of animals that come into the shelter, increase the ones that get out safely, and then get the number coming in to be equal to those going out.

Much has been made about the importance of low-cost spay/neuter and its role of in lowering the animal population. and it is, indeed, an important part of the equation.
However, there are other ways to decrease the number of animals that are coming into shelters and I'm happy to report that Kansas City, MO made a step in that direction this week.
